Ecuador - Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (NOAA-CPC, SGR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 27 April 2023)

  • Since the beginning of January, heavy rainfall has been affecting most parts of the country causing severe weather-related incidents, floods, and landslides that resulted in an increasing number of casualties and affected people.

  • The most affected Provinces are Guayas, Los Ríos, Manabí, Santa Elena, El Oro, Cotopaxi, Santo Domingo de Los Tsáchilas, Esmeraldas, Imbabura, and Chimborazo.

  • According to the latest report of the Ecuador Risk Communication Management Department (SGR), 30 people died in this rainy season (plus 49 fatalities and 39 still missing people due to the landslide in the Alausí Town area, Chimborazo Province occurred on 26 March) and 37 have been injured. Almost 66,000 people have been affected (29,133 in Guayas Province) as well as 14,184 houses (of which 111 were destroyed).

  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is expected over north-western Ecuador while moderate rainfall is forecast across most parts of the rest of the country.
