Ecuador - Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (INAMHI, UN OCHA, Reliefweb) (ECHO Daily Flash of 01 July 2024)

  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Ecuador (in particular the Tungurahua province and the neighbouring Chimborazo province) since 14 June, causing floods, a number of severe weather-related incidents and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • The affected Cantons are Baños de Agua Santa, El Chaco, Patate, Pelileo, Quero and Pillaro in the Tungurahua province and Penipe in the Chimborazo province.
  • UN OCHA reports, as of 1 July, 19 fatalities, 275 displaced people (of which 223 in several shelters) and a total of nearly 3,300 affected people across the aforementioned Cantons. In addition, UN OCHA also reports 48 destroyed houses and 101 damaged houses throughout the affected area.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of the Country.
