Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Ecuador (in particular the Tungurahua province and the neighbouring Chimborazo province) since 14 June, causing floods, a number of severe weather-related incidents and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
The affected Cantons are Baños de Agua Santa, El Chaco, Patate, Pelileo, Quero and Pillaro in the Tungurahua province and Penipe in the Chimborazo province.
UN OCHA reports, as of 1 July, 19 fatalities, 275 displaced people (of which 223 in several shelters) and a total of nearly 3,300 affected people across the aforementioned Cantons. In addition, UN OCHA also reports 48 destroyed houses and 101 damaged houses throughout the affected area.
Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of the Country.
