Ecuador - Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (DG ECHO, Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos del Ecuador (SGR), NOAA-CPC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 12 March 2025)
Widespread heavy rain continues to affect most of Ecuador leading to severe flooding, landslides, increased fatalities, and mounting destruction. The western provinces of Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Loja, and Chimborazo are experiencing the brunt of the impact.
As of 12 March, the National Secretariat of Risk Management (SGR) reports at least 18 fatalities, 3 missing, 91 people injured, 242 people evacuated, and a total of 91,503 people affected. In addition, 25,704 houses were damaged, including 114 that have been destroyed.
On 6 March, Ecuador requested assistance from the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) consisting of food, WASH, shelter and drainage material items for managing the floods in the country.
Following the activation of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR789) to provide flood extent emergency mapping, 34 maps have been produced so far.
On 12-13 March, moderate rainfall is forecast across the country, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in the west and north of the country.
