Ecuador: Earthquake Manabí Coastline, 30 June 2017

  • At 17:29 (GMT-5) an earthquake was registered at 6.3M on the Richter Scale with the depth of 9km along the Jama coastline in the Manabí Province. Approximately 25,000 people reside the canton, 90 per cent of the population live in poverty due to the lack of basic needs.

  • The Naval Oceanic Institute of Ecuador has indicated that the earthquake has not generated conditions that could trigger a tsunami along the coastline.

  • Manabí Province and Chone, Jama, San Vincent and Sucre cantons have activated their Emergency Operations Committees (COE). Authorities are meeting and evaluating the situation. The Minister of Risk Management has immediately deployed to Manabí.

  • The Portoviejo (Manabí) Integral Security System ECU911 has received reports of five people injured at province level and one house affected in the Junín district.

  • There have been no reports of major damages to infrastructure nor roads. The parish Canuto in Chone is without electricity.

  • The Resident Coordinator from the United Nations System and the Humanitarian Country Team are monitoring the situation. A local UNICEF team in Pedernales has reported no major damages and it is observed that people are alarmed and nervous.

  • It is important to highlight that Jama, Muisne and Pedernales were the districts that suffered the most from 7.8M the earthquake that struck in 16 April 2016.
