ACCORDING TO DHA REGIONAL TECHNICAL ADVISER/QUITO, US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY AND OTHER SOURCES:

1. AT 2303HRS GMT ON 28 MARCH 1996 (LOCAL TIME:1803HRS ON 28 MARCH 1996) AN EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 5.7 ON RICHTER SCALE AFFECTED PROVINCE OF COTOPAXI (120 KM SOUTH OF QUITO). EPICENTRE LOCATED AT LATITUDE 1.06 SOUTH AND LONGITUDE 78.60 WEST.

2. RURAL COMMUNITIES MOST AFFECTED ARE PUJILI, LA VICTORIA, MULALILLO, ZUMBAHUA, NAGSICHE, SAN JUAN, PUCARA AND CUSUBAMBA. THESE POOR RURAL COMMUNITIES ARE LOCATED AT AVERAGE ALTITUDE OF 3,000 METRES. QUAKE WAS FELT IN QUITO, LATACUNGA AND AMBATO, CAUSING MINOR DAMAGE TO WINDOWS AND MASONRY.

3. REPORTED NUMBER OF DEAD VARIES FROM 13 TO 19, SOME 40 INJURED.

4. MAJORITY OF HOUSING IS BUILT WITH ADOBE WALLS AND HEAVY TILE ROOFS. RADIO REPORTING SOME 70 HOUSES DESTROYED.

5. NATIONAL RESPONSE HAS BEEN ACTIVATED INCLUDING DAMAGE ASSESSMENT BY CIVIL DEFENCE.

6. SO FAR NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN MADE.
