Operational Updates
WFP officially handed over the fully renovated Warehouse of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), a strategic facility with the capacity to store non-food items. The warehouse rehabilitation included the expansion of the physical space, as well as the improvement of the office area, and installation of a cold room and hangar. It was equipped with shelving, forklifts, and security systems. Representatives from state institutions and the private sector, along with the COE technical team, participated in the inauguration ceremony. During his speech, COE’s Executive Director,
General Méndez, on behalf of President Luis Abinader and the Dominican State, highlighted the valuable and constant support of the World Food Programme in this and other key initiatives. The warehouse optimizes disaster response and strengthens the resilience of the Dominican Republic, ensuring that resources reach vulnerable communities in a timely manner. Additionally, it is part of two strategic projects: "Adaptation to humanitarian response to anticipate, prepare, and respond to climatic shocks," funded by ECHO, and "Yaque del Norte River Basin," supported by the United States Government. With this initiative, the COE and its international allies reaffirm their commitment to emergency preparedness, prioritizing efficiency and coordination in protecting the Dominican population.
The WFP leads panel "Local best practices on integrating technology and artificial intelligence in DR and emergency and disaster management." World Vision, within the framework of its ‘’Fortalece’’ project, convenes a seminar with the aim of establishing a space for intersectoral analysis that allows identifying replicable experiences on the use of technology in disaster risk management and Climate Change, with the purpose of strengthening the capacities of the General Directorate of Environment and Risks of the Ministry of Education. The WFP highlighted its innovative use of AI in satellite image processing and photogrammetry, evaluation of affected infrastructure, and automation of hydrometeorological forecasts for the timely issuance of alerts.
WFP’s Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change unit strengthened capacities of the technical team of the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET). Topics related to data transfer and inter-institutional coordination were addressed to ensure the flow of relevant information for monitoring meteorological and drought threats. The WFP led the discussion on topics such as progress in the ANACAONA tool, which is used for climate data analysis and monitoring, the Early Warning Systems Policy, which aims to improve response capacity to adverse climatic events, the creation of maps and bulletins for localized internal forecasts, and updates on the System of Observation and Prediction of Meteorological Phenomena (SOFF). The meeting established a solid foundation for inter-institutional collaboration, improving response capacity to climatic threats.
