Heavy rainfall has been affecting the northern and central regions of the Dominican Republic – particularly the provinces of Espaillat and María Trinidad Sánchez – since 24 February, leading to flooding that has caused displacement and extensive damage.
According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as of 3 March, a total of 16 120 individuals have been displaced across the affected provinces. The municipality of Gaspar Hernández in Espaillat province has sustained damage to about 600 homes, while the municipalities of Nagua in María Trinidad Sánchez province and Puerto Plata have each seen roughly 1 500 homes damaged.
Light rain is forecast over parts of the Dominican Republic during the next 48 hours.
