This report covers the period 01 Jan 2013 to 31 Dec 2013.
Overview
During 2013 the efforts against the cholera outbreaks were continued. Along with cholera awareness-raising campaigns, the Dominican Red Cross (DRC) supported the Ministry of Health in epidemiological surveillance using the volunteer network. In addition, with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the DRC developed activities in response to the new outbreaks, together with the Haitian Red Cross (HRC) and in coordination with the Coalition to Eliminate Cholera in Haiti and the government.
Currently the main focus of work of the DCR is still working in disaster response, however there is still much work to do from the standpoint of the three pillars for development. These three pillars would be: the internal and external communication, application of a strategy for resource mobilization and the formulation of a Binational Plan of Action based on the bilateral agreement of cooperation with the Haitian Red Cross.
Regarding the political panorama the country during 2013, a point to highlight is the Sentence 168- 13 of the Constitutional Tribunal, which ruled that the children of citizens in transit born in the Dominican Republic are denied the right to Dominican nationality, this generated strong debates and reactions at the national and international levels.
