OPERATIONALDEVELOPMENTS
UNHCR attended the 2nd ordinary session of the Djibouti parliament. On 1 October, UNHCR Representative attended the 2nd ordinary parliamentary session of 2024. The session hosted by the parliament president, was attended by cabinet members headed by the Prime Minister, members of parliament, diplomatic corps, and representatives of international organizations and civil societies. UNHCR took this opportunity to thank the President of the Parliament, second personality of the country, for his leadership and all the work the parliament is delivering regarding refugee laws.
The Prime Minister also made a special request to members of diplomatic missions and United nations representatives to support and advocate for the Djibouti candidacy for the post of African Union Chairperson where Djibouti is represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.
Implementing partners received training on the Prevention of Sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA). On 29 September, UNHCR provided a PSEA and sexual harassment training to fifteen staffs including 4 men and 11 women working with different implementing partners agencies. This is part of UNHCR's efforts to support its partners in strengthening their compliance with regulations and code of conduct for the benefit of displaced populations. The fight against sexual exploitation and abuse for the people we serve, as well as sexual harassment in the workplace, remains a top priority for the government and UNHCR in a context of inclusion.
REFUGEE RESPONSE
UNHCR and ONARS held a social gathering with refugee community leaders in Markazi site. On 25 September, UNHCR Representative and ONARS Executive Secretary held a social gathering with Yemenite and Eritrean refugee community leaders hosted in Markazi site in Obock region. This was a time to seat together over some food and drinks for refugees to be able to socialize with UNHCR and ONARS teams and be reassured that UNHCR and ONARS are always there for them. During the gathering some key discussions were held focusing on refugee empowerment, community reintegration, tree planting projects and the replacement of refugee shelters that are damaged. UNHCR Head of Obock Field Unit and ONARS site manager were tasked to make an assessment to determine the number of shelters that need to be replaced.
UNHCR provided cash assistance to the most vulnerable refugees. During the reporting period UNHCR started cash distribution to support the most vulnerable refugees. The assistance comes quarterly to help these refugees with their basic needs, about 59 people were reached including 27 in Ali-Addeh, 15 in Holl-Holl, 11 in Markazi and 6 in Djibouti city, each person received about USD 170.
