UNHCR met with the Minister of Social Affairs and Solidarity. On 8 October 2024, UNHCR Representative met with Djibouti’s Minister of Social Affairs and Solidarity (MASS) HE Ms. Ouloufa Ismail Abdo. The discussions focused on areas of mutual interests that can facilitate effective integration of refugees and ensure their social protection. In the past, UNHCR and MASS collaborated on several activities including refugee inclusion in national medical insurance scheme, national social registry, refugee profiling and cash assistance for vulnerable urban refugees.

UNHCR held discussions with the Minister of Health. On 9 October UNHCR Representative met with the Minister of health HE Dr Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh. The discussions focused on social protection of refugees especially healthcare management and their inclusion at all levels of care as healthcare is one of key sectors of concern to both UNHCR and Djibouti government. The minister reiterated his commitment to continuing the good work with UNHCR with view to finding solutions to existing challenges together. The Representative thanked the minister for Djibouti’s open-door policy and assured the minister that UNHCR technical teams are already looking for possible solutions with few resources available.

REFUGEE RESPONSE

Refugee community leaders in Holl-Holl received training in refugee protection. On 3 October, UNHCR in collaboration with ONARS provided training to refugee leaders hosted in Holl-Holl. The training focused on National Refugee laws, international protection, rights and duties of refugees, fraud and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.

UNHCR held discussions with Ethiopian refugee community. During the week, UNHCR team visited the Ethiopian refugee community with the aim of listening to them and reiterate UNHCR mandate on international protection. Refugees had the opportunity to raise any concern, they may have and UNHCR set up a team to promptly address all the questions raised.

UNHCR provided roofing iron sheets to refugees whose shelters were destroyed by the storms in Ali-Addeh. During the reporting period, UNHCR continued to provide iron sheets to 55 refugee families who lost their shelters due to the strong winds that devastated the area in July 2024.
