The UN Resident Coordinator, in collaboration with WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF and WHO as well as with the Ministry of Interior, has prepared an overview, which is summarized below.

Current Activities

1. Food has been primarily provided by the Government, WFP, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. (See table of contributions). Distribution is ongoing in all affected provinces: Ali Sabieh, Dikhil, Tadjourah, Obock, Djibouti for over 100,000 beneficiaries.

Unmet Needs

2. These are essentially non-food items such as kitchen utensils, water containers, water and water tankers for the distribution of water in the rural areas. Government and UN agencies fully agree on the importance of this requirement, in fact indispensable for the daily lives of the rural, drought affected population.

  1. OCHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions for the immediate relief needs. Funds channelled through OCHA will be spent in coordination with the relevant organizations of the UN system and OCHA will provide written confirmation of their use. Funds should be transferred to OCHA Account No. CO-590.160.1 at the UBS AG, PO Box 2770, CH-1211 Geneva 2, Switzerland, with reference: OCHA - Djibouti Drought 1999.

4. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform OCHA Geneva, as indicated below, of relief missions, pledges or contributions and their corresponding values by item.
