Key strategic developments in epidemiology
• Geographic Spread: Since 01 January 2024 and as of 3 November2024, a total of 18 member states across the WHO African region have reported mpox cases, of which, 14 have active transmission. Active transmission is defined as cases being reported in the past six weeks.
• In the last reporting week, 421 new confirmed cases with no death were reported, accounted for in the total of 1,404 suspected cases reported for the same period.
• On 30 October, one case of clade Ib was identified in UK, from an individual with travel history to East Africa.
• Last week, there were reports of mpox deaths linked to HIV reported from Uganda, Central African Republic (CAR) and Kenya. Cases of mpox co-infection with measles and varicella zoster virus (VZV) have also been reported inDRCand Nigeria respectively. The current Mpox outbreak has highlighted the urgent need for improved integration of care access and testing. To kickstart the process, WHO has developed and disseminated SOP to support the integration of HIV and syphilis testing within the mpox response.
