CASH ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME
In July, WFP is increasing its cash distributions to reach 1.1 million people in camps, collective sites and host families, across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. This is part of WFP’s scale-up plan to reach 1.7 million people with food and cash in July.
WFP will progressively increase the number of people reached with life-saving food and cash assistance over the next six months.
Under its scale-up plan, WFP aims to provide US$15 in cash per person to go towards their food basket and urgent needs for the month.
WFP DRC uses multisectoral analyses to determine cash assistance feasibility.
Therefore selected sites across the three provinces have all been assessed for market functionality and accessibility, infrastructure, security and protection issues, as well as beneficiary preferences.
Whilst cash gives families choice, autonomy and more flexibility in the use of their assistance, market stability is a pre-requisite.
Therefore WFP aims to maintain programmatic flexibility to shift its assistance modality between cash and in-kind food depending on the resources available and what is appropriate according to feasibility assessments and preferences.
