Context
• Early December 2025 was marked by an escalation of fighting between AFC/M23 and government-aligned forces, significantly deteriorating the security situation in the territories of Uvira and Walungu and triggering large-scale population movements.
• In Uvira, hostilities along the Kamanyola–Luvungi–Luberizi–Sange axis led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people, with major influxes reported in Sange, Kiliba, and Uvira town, placing heavy pressure on host communities and basic services.
• In Walungu, clashes in the Kaziba health zone have triggered significant population displacement, while widespread insecurity has confined large segments of the population, severely restricting access to food, livelihoods, healthcare, and markets.
• The crisis has exacerbated pre-existing vulnerabilities, including disrupted agricultural activities, restricted mobility, reduced market functionality, and rising food insecurity in areas already classified as highly vulnerable prior to the escalation.
• In response, WFP and partners have conducted rapid assessments to capture displacement dynamics and food security conditions, with the aim of informing emergency response and operational planning in an increasingly volatile context.
