Clashes between M23, the national Armed Forces (FARDC) and other armed groups intensified in Masisi and Rutshuru in North Kivu province. Almost 840,000 people remain displaced while over 550,000 people have returned to the area.

The number of cholera cases is increasing in Masisi and Rutshuru, North Kivu, and the nutrition situation is deteriorating while access to health care in these territories is shrinking.

Violence against civilians persisted in Djugu in Ituri province with deliberate and targeted attacks on displacement camps. A recent attack killed at least 45 people including 23 children.

Children and women are bearing the brunt of the conflict and subsequent displacement. There are serious concerns about gender-based violence -- including against children -- and the lack of protection of children. The scale of the lifesaving humanitarian response remains substantially insufficient.

A humanitarian systemwide scale up has been activated for Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu for three months. UNICEF activated a Level 3 Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure Scale-up for the eastern DRC for six months until 14 December.
