Highlights:

  • The situation in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces has drastically deteriorated since the end of 2024. Intense armed clashes resumed between the Congolese Army (FARDC) and its allies and the M23 armed group in various territories in North Kivu – notably Lubero, Masisi, Walikale – and in Kalehe territory in South Kivu.
  • The fighting, which has involved the use of heavy artillery as well as airstrikes, poses considerable risks to civilians and humanitarian workers, and has led to massive population movements.
  • Humanitarian access to the most vulnerable people has been limited and remains a challenge where fighting is taking place.
  • According to the most recent UN Group of Experts report, M23 has gained territory, expanded its influence and forged new alliances with other non-state armed groups.
