Highlights

· Armed conflict escalated dramatically in eastern DRC in the first half of 2025, with the M23 armed group seizing large parts of North and South Kivu in January and February.

· This situation has triggered population movement among 2 million people, including around 1.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 1.2 million returnees, primarily in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri. As of June, North and South Kivu alone reported 4 million IDPs.

· Women (51%) and children under 18 (58.5 %) make up the majority of IDPs.

· The health crisis is severe, with approximately 34,000 suspected cholera cases and 802 deaths by mid-year, amid surging mpox, measles, and collapsing health systems.

· Armed violence remains pervasive, with widespread targeting of civilians. In a particularly violent attack on 12 February, 70 people were abducted and beheaded in a church in Lubero Territory, North Kivu.

· Humanitarian access remains severely constrained, and critical funding shortfalls are jeopardizing response efforts.
