Worth 574,893 USD, the agreement was signed by the head of JICA in DRC, Eiro Yonezaki, and the UNDP Country Director a. i. Rene Guiraud.
Thanks to the initiative, 2,000 police officers in North Kivu and Oriental provinces will be trained on security concerns, human rights, sexual violence, and the safety of the population. This three-month project will reinforce the capacities of police officers to effectively fulfill their mission according to international human rights standards.
A particular emphasis will be given to the fight against impunity and the interaction with communities; capacity-building; effective and efficient management; as well as human resources and logistics. The project should also improve the safety situation across the country. The training will be given by MONUC, the UN's peace-keeping mission in DRC and the national police force of DRC. It could be renewed until 2012.
