North Kivu: Frequent rebel attacks in Kanyabayonga

The town of Kanyabayonga, in the north-eastern North Kivu province, has been theatre since mid April to persistent looting and attacks by rebel forces taking advantage of the absence of the Congolese regular armed forces (FARDC), according to a local administration official Dominique Bofombo. The latest attack was carried out on Sunday night.

According to Bofombo, the northern and southern areas of the Lubero territory, a very populated area, are under control of militants of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and Mayi-Mayi rebels. The local official called for an urgent deployment of regular troops. Radio Okapi however reported that an army spokesman responded that no units are yet ready to be sent to the area, adding that police should guarantee security in the area.
