Islamic Relief commits $100,000 for volcano victims in Congo

The devastating volcano eruption in Congo last week (17th January 2002) destroyed approximately 30% of Goma and caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people. Many thousands of people are returning to Goma from Rwanda to find they have lost everything.
In Rwanda itself, reports suggest that thousands of houses have been destroyed due to tremors and earthquakes that have been occurring throughout the week since Mount Nyiragongo erupted.

Islamic Relief immediately allocated $100 000 for the disaster and is preparing to send an Emergency Response Team (ERT) to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ERT hopes to conduct an overall needs assessment and identify suitable projects to implement.
