HIGHLIGHTS
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) continues to support the following activities to prevent, detect, and respond to the Mpox outbreak with focus on migrants, Internally Displaced Populations (IDPs), highly mobile population like truck driver and Motorcycle taxi, and cross border communities. IOM is also the co-continental lead for Point of Entry (PoE) in coordination with WHO, Africa CDC, Member state, Regional Economic committees and other partners/ stakeholders. During the reporting period, IOM’s key achievements included:

IOM deployed a senior emergency health response specialist to the DRC to lead the PoE Sub Pillar coordination under the African continental coordination structure.

IOM deployed surge staff to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, Rwanda and ongoing deployment to Burundi to support the country team by providing technical and operational support to member state.

38 Points of Entries (PoEs) in eight countries supported to undertake Mpox preparedness and response measures including surveillance, screening, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), and capacity building.

Over 192,000 health screenings of travellers were supported in three countries DRC, Uganda, and Guinea).

Over 240 border officials and Community Health Workers (CHWs) were trained to detect and respond to Mpox in three countries (Kenya, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe).

Nearly 20,000 people were reached with risk communication messages on Mpox in Uganda.

Over 1600 individuals in Mozambique participated in Mpox information and sensitization sessions.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
As of 15 September 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 6,201 confirmed cases globally, including 32 deaths reported in 15 African countries since the beginning of this year. The majority of Mpox cases are from the following three countries: DRC (5,399), Burundi (564) and Nigeria (55).
During the reporting period, over 2,300 new confirmed cases of Mpox were reported in 11 countries, increasing the number of confirmed cases by 59 per cent since 3 September 2024. Over the past two weeks, the number of new confirmed cases in the DRC and Burundi increased by 33 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. Uganda confirmed one additional case during the reporting period and 90 suspected cases are under investigation.
