Context
In 2022, almost 150,000 cases of measles were reported in the DRC, with 1,875 deaths, mostly children under 5. In 2023, 24 of the 26 provinces have reported outbreaks, with nearly 93,000 cases and 1,135 deaths1 . Protracted conflict and recent population displacements in the east of the country have contributed, and continue to contribute, to these outbreaks and disease persistence. However, relatively stable provinces and health zones with more sustained support and response activities from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and its partners are also reporting cases.
For example, in Haut-Katanga province in the Kilwa health zone, despite vaccination campaigns carried out in 2021 and 2022, has consistently reported measles cases throughout the zone.
In March 2023, in support of the Ministry of Health, at the request of the Measles Coordination Unit (Direction Surveillance Epidémiologique-DSE), the Integrated Analytics Cell (CAI) carried out an integrated analysis in the Kilwa health zone (HZ) to understand the reasons for the recurrence of measles outbreaks. The analysis provides results taking into account the gender, socio-behavioural and environmental context, with the aim of strengthening multi-sectoral strategies and activities in response to measles risk factors and improving vaccination coverage.
