Less than a week after the Security Council
urged the parties to the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC) to plan the withdrawal of their forces, the five-day Rwandan troop
pull-out from the Congolese town of Pweto has begun as scheduled, the United
Nations mission in the country said today.
The announcement was made by the Chief
of Staff of the UN Mission in the DRC (MONUC) at the operation's Kinshasa
headquarters.
The UN Mission had sent a team of military observers to verify the withdrawal.
UN military observers are also positioned to verify the withdrawal of two battalions by Uganda, as announced by Ugandan authorities on 20 February.
