DR Congo: North Kivu - Rebels just outside Goma, residents fleeing
"The entire population is fleeing
Goma. The CNDP rebels just 4 kilometres from the city", said a MISNA
source, confirming the general flight from the capital of the North Kivu
province, in east Democratic Republic of Congo. "The situation is
entirely out of control. The people are fleeing in every way possible in
direction of Rwanda or south. It isn't clear what the UN mission is doing",
added the source, before ending the conversation. MONUC (UN mission in
DR-Congo) helicopter gunships intervened this morning to repel the advance
of the CNDP rebels, who were 15km from the city. After a break of around
an hour, fighting resumed later in the morning between the Congolese army
and rebels in Kibumba, in which the CNDP men appear to have gained ground.
