The tension in Kalemie, Katanga, remains high after a civil society demonstration against the fighting in North Kivu degenerated, after clashes between the police and demonstrators involving tear gas, while some gunfire was also heard in the streets, said UN sources. Some demonstrators raised barricades and burned tires, prompting the intervention of police forces. Demonstrators also launched rocks in front of the offices of international organizations and so far several wounded have been noted, including two police officers. Meanwhile, in the region of North Kivu the fighting between the CNDP rebels led by Laurent Nkunda and the regular army continued overnight. Local sources said that as the army retreated from Tongo (60 km. northwest of Goma), which the army recently took over, there were clashes with the rebels, which ended around dawn.
