DR Congo: Force Commander tells Goma MONUC doing all it can to protect city

General Babacar Gaye, MONUC's Force Commander, has reassured the population of Goma that the United Nations peacekeeping mission is doing all it can to provide security for them. He told them that the city of Goma is being protected both by MONUC and the Congolese National Army, the FARDC.

"MONUC is reinforcing itself in Goma because this city is still under the control of the legitimate Government of this country", he said.

In Goma, there is close co-operation between MONUC, the Congolese national police and the Congolese army so that the violence which contributes to a climate of fear in the city can be reduced dramatically.

"The people of this city and of this province have suffered too much. We understand that they are desperate to see the end of this crisis. In this current situation, we're doing everything we can, General Gaye said.
