Democratic Republic of the Congo: Overview of incidents affecting humanitarian workers (1st January 2020 to 31 December 2024)

In 2024, the operational context in the Democratic Republic of Congo was marked by an increase in violence, with many incidents directly targeting humanitarian workers, especially in the eastern regions. A total of 428 incidents affecting humanitarian workers were recorded, making 2024 the deadliest year for aid workers in the DRC in the past five years. These incidents resulted in the deaths of 9 humanitarian workers and 46 injured. North Kivu reported 95 per cent of the incidents, South Kivu, 21 per cent, Ituri 6 per cent, and Tanganyika 12 per cent. Additionally, 38 per cent of the incidents involved theft, looting, or intrusions into humanitarian premises, while 24 per cent involved intimidation, threats, or assaults.
