Context
• January and February 2025 were marked by an intensification of fighting, which resulted in the capture of Goma and Bukavu by M23 troops. This has altered the structure of the IDP camps in Goma, Minova and Kalehe, followed by a mass movement of IDPs to schools/churches (collective centers) and areas of origin.
• In North Kivu, especially Goma, the IDP camps have been dismantled and emptied of their inhabitants. The various assessments show a massive movement of IDPs returning to their areas of origin, primarily Masisi and Rutshuru.
• In South Kivu, on February 17, 2025, the CCCM published a report stating that the collective centers hosting the IDPs in Minova, Kalehe and surrounding areas are now 92% empty. About 25,000 households, corresponding to 150,000 people, have been displaced because of the crisis, according to the report.
• The first remote assessment of the IDPs in the camps around Goma, conducted at the beginning of February by WFP, provided a snapshot of food security and the main challenges.
• This new remote assessment, using the same methodology and supplemented with households from South Kivu (Minova, Bulenga, Kalehe, Lushebere, etc.), aims to provide an update on the IDPs' situation in both provinces.
