Democratic Republic of the Congo - Landslide (media, METTELSAT) (ECHO Daily Flash of 11 March 2026)

  • A new huge landslide, triggered by very heavy rainfall during the previous days, occurred in the Rubaya mine area, close to the Rubaya town (Masisi territory, North Kivu province, north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo) on 6 March, causing casualties and widespread damage.
  • Media reports, as of 11 March, at least 300 unconfirmed fatalities among the miners and among the families in the surrounding areas. Several destroyed houses were reported across the affected area.
  • On 3 March a similar event caused approximately 200 fatalities in the same area.
  • Over the next 5 days, more rainfall, with locally heavy rainfall, is still forecast over north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, including the already affected area.
