Since 1 October, renewed and intensified fighting has taken place between armed groups in North Kivu province, particularly in the western parts of the M23-controlled area’s in Rutchuru and Masisi territories as well as towards Kibumba, close to the city of Goma.
At least 20 civilians were killed and over 30 injured whilst over 84,700 people were forced to flee their homes, many of which are seeking safety around MONUSCO bases.
The risk of escalating violence in the affected areas, including those hosting displaced persons, remains very high. Further population movements are to be expected. To date, already 2.4 million people are displaced in North Kivu province.
Humanitarian actors are preparing to rapidly step up the humanitarian response, as part of the intensification of humanitarian operations in Eastern DRC, launched on 16 June 2023. However, humanitarian access in the conflict zone is constrained by the ongoing fighting.
