Displacement trends, April 2025
• There was a drop in displacement in April 2025 compared with the previous month, with a recorded 125,840 displaced households in the five provinces of eastern DRC.
• There was a slight decrease in the number of returns observed, accounting for 12% (15,346) of all population movements in April, returning to their localities, mainly in Djugu, Masisi and Rutshuru.
• In South Kivu, the M23 continued its offensives against VDP, briefly capturing the strategic town of Kaziba in Walungu territory.
• The provinces of South Kivu and Ituri were the most heavily affected by displacement, linked respectively to the M23 crisis and offensives by the CODECO and ADF armed groups. In South Kivu there were a recorded 54,896 displaced households, followed by North Kivu with 34,147 households, and Ituri with 23,421 households.
• Other displacement in South Kivu was caused by clashes between the FARDC-backed Wazalendo and the Gumino-Twirwaneho and Red Tabara coalition in Fizi. In Ituri, new displacements were linked to rumours of ADF attacks (Mambasa territory), clashes between two FPAC factions (in Irumu territory) and attacks by the CODECO armed group against the UPDF and civilians (Djugu and Mahagi territories).
