CONTEXT
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) faces one of the world's most protracted, severe, complex, neglected and tolerated humanitarian crises in the world, a crisis that has lasted for three decades. Armed conflicts, political and governance challenges, intermingled with persistent vulnerability to climate change and natural hazards have fueled this complex situation. It is a protection crisis and a displacement crisis, with multiple consequences, including lack of access to basic services, gender-based violence, and the persistence of epidemics. In addition to the humanitarian needs related to shocks, the country is also experiencing many chronic needs, e.g. food insecurity.
The security context has deteriorated in the East since 2022 following the resurgence of the M23 armed group. Despite the DRC’s human potential, exceptional natural resources and some economic improvements, progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals is still limited. The context is also marked by the gradual disengagement process of MONUSCO (most recently from South Kivu), the presidential and legislative election in December 2023, and the establishment of a new Government in mid-2024.
