Carnage in the Congo: Churches ease the suffering

Amid the unfolding horrors of war, World Relief and church partners are responding to widespread suffering in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - a central African nation torn apart by brutal conflict.
According to recent reports, almost 3 million people have died in the Congo, formerly called Zaire, in the past 33 months - surpassing the death toll of other devastating conflicts in Sudan and Sierra Leone.

The full picture of suffering is just beginning to unfold as relief workers witness the extent of the devastation. War has exacerbated severe food shortages in the Congo, leading to widespread malnutrition, disease and starvation. The United Nations World Food Program estimates that 16 million people - a third of the population - are at risk of hunger.

World Relief, partners meet urgent needs

World Relief is working through evangelical churches in the Congo to save the lives of vulnerable people in the midst of the nation's current crisis.

World Relief and church partners are providing life-saving supplies and equipment for the Ruanguba Medical Center and Ruanguba Hospital.

In addition, working with the Evangelical Covenant Church, World Relief is providing life-saving immunizations for 40,000 at-risk children.
