SITUATION

1. SINCE 15 JULY HEAVY RAINS HAVE HIT PARTS OF DPRK , WITH MORE THAN 500 MM PRECIPITATION BETWEEN 24 - 27 JULY.

2. ACCORDING TO REPORTS BY THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY (KCNA), THE HARDEST HIT AREAS ARE NORTH AND SOUTH HWANGHAE PROVINCES, PYONGYANG, NORTH AND SOUTH PHYONGAN PROVINCES AND JAGANG PROVINCE.

3. ACCORDING TO KCNA, AND SUPPORTED BY OTHER SOURCES, THE RAINS HAVE CLAIMED AT LEAST 11 LIVES, HOUSES HAVE BEEN WASHED AWAY OR DAMAGED, THERE IS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO ROADS, BRIDGES, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND RAILWAY LINES. FARMLAND HAS BEEN SUBMERGED, AND SERIOUS DAMAGE TO CROPS IS EXPECTED.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

4. THE GOVERNMENT OF DPRK IS PRESENTLY ASSESSING THE DAMAGE AND COLLECTING DATA ON THE DISASTER.

5. OFFICIALS FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND THE UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE HAVE DONE AN INITIAL SURVEY TO TWO AREAS IN THOSAN COUNTY ON 31 JULY. THE RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE'S INITIAL REPORT CONFIRMS THE DAMAGES AS REPORTED BY THE MEDIA.

6. THE UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE SITUATION AND FORWARD FURTHER INFORMATION AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE.

7. THIS INFORMATION REPORT RELATES ONLY TO THE FLOODING CAUSED AS A RESULT RECENT RAINS IN JULY 1996. IT IS NOT LINKED TO THE UN CONSOLIDATED APPEAL FOR DPRK (1996-1997) ISSUED IN JUNE 1996. HOWEVER, THIS NEW ROUND OF FLOODS AGGRAVATES THE SITUATION OUTLINED IN THE APPEAL.
