ACT Appeal: Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary - Assistance to Flood Victims EUCS-21

Appeal Target: US$ 1,075,162
Balance Requested from ACT Network: US$ 1,063,986

Geneva, 4 September 2002

Dear Colleagues,

Raging floods that hit Central and Eastern Europe in August this year caused a significant movement of people in search of temporary shelter due to massive damage to housing and public infrastructure. The worst affected and least able to cope have been Czech Republic and Slovakia. Neighbouring with these two countries, Hungary has also been hard-hit by the regional disaster.

Immediate needs in the three countries remain but are not limited to hygiene items, disinfectants, medicines and medical supplies and reconstruction materials.

ACT International immediately reacted to the crisis by releasing financial support from its Rapid Response Fund to members in the Czech Republic and Romania. Soon after, ACT issued an appeal for Romania and a revised appeal for the Russian Federation to include the newly hit areas.

In this appeal, ACT seeks financial support for its emergency operation in Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The appeal will be revised as new members join the operation.

ACT members Hungarian Interchurch Aid working in partnership with Slovakian Diakonia and Orthodox Church in Czech Lands are appealing for ACT funding to provide immediate, short-term and mid-term assistance to the affected families in Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. Their proposed programs comprise the following components:

  • Medicines and medical supplies
  • Psycho-social and pastoral counselling
  • Temporary shelter
  • Rehabilitation of public infrastructure

ACT is a worldwide network of churches and related agencies meeting human need through coordinated emergency response.

The ACT Coordinating Office is based with the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Switzerland.
