Operational Updates
• From 21 May to 1 June, WFP conducted a two-week field mission to visit the school feeding programme financed by the Russian Federation in 13 municipalities of the five eastern provinces. The visit included a workshop to review the capacity-building plans of the supported institutions and monitor the implementation of the project. Participants included national, provincial and municipal coordination teams, authorities at all levels and representatives of agricultural cooperatives, schools and community canteens.
• 150 people were informed about the tools for demanddriven production planning, school menu design, analysis of schoolchildren’s tastes and preferences, identification of vulnerabilities and risks in the face of drought, hurricanes and other wheather-related events and the use of the +Resilient Insurance modality.
• As part of the work of the United Nations Emergency Technical Team (UNETE), coordinated in Cuba by WFP, a meeting was held on 19 May with the participation of experts and United Nations agencies focal points for emergency preparedness to discuss high-intensity events response. This is very timely as the cyclonic season in the Caribbean officially starts on 1 June. Food and non-food supplies in emergencies were also mentioned as part of the United Nations assistance preparation.
• At the end of May, a deficit of 15 percent of the accumulated rainfall, mostly in western provinces, has been reported. While in the central and eastern regions, rainfall accumulations were slightly above the usual values. However, agricultural drought is at 75 percent countrywide, a higher level than from 1981 to 2010. This affects both the eastern and western regions.
