CUBA: UMCOR's HURRICANE RESPONSE CAN BEGIN
UMCOR can now begin relief work in Cuba in response to Hurricanes Ike and Gustav. This week the US Government granted UMCOR's parent agency, the General Board of Global Ministries, the appropriate licenses to provide the kind of humanitarian assistance that is so desperately needed in Cuba.
The two licenses will allow UMCOR to implement up to $1.1 million in humanitarian response from the present day through October 2009. While the license is restricted to specific activities as outlined in the license application, this opportunity represents a lifeline to thousands left in need by the storms. Please give to the new Cuba Emergency Advance to support this effort, UMCOR Advance #3020821.
SOUTH AFRICA: UMCOR HELPS BUILD A SCHOOL
UMCOR is supporting the Central Methodist Mission's Ray of Hope program in Johannesburg, South Africa, by helping build a school for displaced and unaccompanied refugee children. The Mission serves as a place of refuge to many asylum seekers and refugees from Zimbabwe.
The new school will ensure a safe, structured and proactive learning environment for students and will be open to refugee children from Zimbabwe who otherwise do not have access to education. UMCOR will also provide medical care, counseling, job placement, educational and recreational programs.
Help Central Methodist Mission provide the love and care to people in need by giving to South Africa, Undesignated, UMCOR Advance # 00393A. Please indicate Central Methodist Mission in your giving.
