CUBA - HURRICANE KATE
UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
19 NOVEMBER 1985

SITUATION

1. UNDRO RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT HURRICANE KATE IN THE NIGHT FROM 18 TO 19 NOVEMBER HIT EASTERN PARTS OF CUBA. HURRICANE EXPECTED TO REACH CITY OF HAVANA BY NOON TODAY (LOCAL TIME).

2. THE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM RUN BY THE NATIONAL CIVIL DEFENCE HAS PROVEN TO BE EFFECTIVE. EVACUATION OF POPULATION IN ENDANGERED AREAS IS BEING CARRIED OUT IN A SATISFACTORY FASHION.

3. SO FAR NO INDICATION OF ANY CASUALTIES. FIGURES ON MATERIAL DAMAGE NOT YET AVAILABLE.

SITUATION

1. HURRICANE KATE WITH WIND SPEED OF UP TO 168 KM/PH HIT HAVANA BETWEEN 3 P.M. AND 5.30 P.M. (LOCAL TIME) ON 19 NOVEMBER 1985.

2. DUE TO POPULATION FOLLOWING EVACUATION INSTRUCTIONS, FEW CASUALTIES. ONLY FOUR DEATHS REPORTED SO FAR.

3. REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE IS BEING PREPARED BY GOVERNMENT FOR AREAS OF EMERGENCY FOOD, ELECTRICAL POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS. DETAILS WILL FOLLOW.

4. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT YET REQUESTED UNDRO TO LAUNCH AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

SITUATION

1. THE GOVERNMENT OF CUBA HAS REQUESTED UNDRO TO LAUNCH AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE TO REMEDY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE HURRICANE KATE ON 18/19 NOVEMBER 1985.

2. RELIEF OPERATIONS ARE SUPERVISED BY THE STATE COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC COOPERATION (CECE).

3. GOVT ESTIMATES DAMAGE AS FOLLOWS:

PERSONS AFFECTED: 476,891 (119,240 BELOW AGE 14)
HOUSING: 4,382 DESTROYED, 88,207 DAMAGED
CROPS LOST: BANANA 141,000 MT, RICE 9,862 MT, KIDNEY BEANS 2,005 MT, VEGETABLES 3,500 MT, TUBERS 4,857 MT, CITRUS FRUIT 66,854 MT. 946,110 HA SUGAR CANE DAMAGED AND 34,000 MT SUGAR LOST.

DAMAGE WAS ALSO CAUSED TO AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURES AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS, E.G., SCHOOLS.

NEEDS

4. FOOD: TO COVER NEEDS OF AFFECTED POPULATION FOR AT LEAST 60 DAYS: 1,145 MT DSM, 1,145 MT EDIBLE OIL, 9,443 MT WHEAT FLOUR, 573 MT PULSES.

5. 11.6 MT PESTICIDE.

6. DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM UNDRO DIRECTLY, PREFERABLY BY TELEX (28148 UNDR CH), OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND VALUE.

1. IN RESPONSE TO UNDRO'S APPEAL FOR EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE IN CONNECTION WITH DAMAGE CAUSED BY HURRICANE KATE IN LATE NOVEMBER 1985, INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE HAS COVERED PRIORITY NEEDS.

2. GOVERNMENT OF CUBA WOULD STILL WELCOME ASSISTANCE FOR REHABILITATION.
