CUBA - FLOODS
DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO.1
26 MAY 1994

1. ACCORDING TO CUBAN CIVIL DEFENCE, SERIOUS FLOODING CAUSED BY INTENSE RAINFALL BETWEEN 18 AND 23 MAY HAS AFFECTED FOUR PROVINCES IN EASTERN CUBA, NAMELY GUANTANAMO, SANTIAGO DE CUBA, GRANMA, HOLGUIN.

LOSSES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
  • 12 DEAD
  • 38,600 PERSONS EVACUATED
  • 172,443 ANIMALS EVACUATED
  • 4,370 HOUSES DESTROYED
  • 38,726 HOUSES AFFECTED
  • MORE THAN 100 KILOMETERS OF ROAD DAMAGED INCLUDING NUMEROUS BRIDGES DESTROYED.
3,886 HECTARES OF AGRICULTURAL LAND FLOODED SUGAR PRODUCTION DISRUPTED IN THE AFFECTED PROVINCES.

2. DHA/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE HAVANA WHO WAS IN CONTACT IMMEDIATELY WITH DHA GENEVA, INDICATED THAT BARACOA AND MAISI WERE ISOLATED FROM THE REST OF THE ISLAND OWING TO LOCAL FLOODS.
