ANALYSIS OVERVIEW
The current number of 126 thousands refugees and asylum seekers represent an increase of 21% of the total number of refugees and asylum seekers individually registered between January and June 2024. Coastal countries (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo) are affected by forced displacement because of the ongoing situation of conflict in the Sahel. New arrivals in these countries started in April 2021 and become more frequent since January 2023.
A total of 44% of refugee and asylum seekers are hosted in Cote d’Ivoire, 31% are hosted in Togo and 14% are hosted in Benin.
More than 64% of refugees and asylum seekers come from Burkina Faso. As the registration process is ongoing, a total of 57% are already registered biometrically and 47% (54,443) asylum seekers awaiting registration in Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Benin and Ghana. 6% are internally displaced and are hosted in Togo Côte d’Ivoire hosts over 931,041 persons at risk of statelessness at a result of general census made by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) in 2018.
