Natural Disasters Monitoring - October 12, 2018
On 11 October 2018, the Costa Rica Government reported recent heavy rain affected a total of 240 communities in 20 Cantons near the Zelaya, San Rafael, Guarial, and Grande rivers. Currently, two shelters are providing assistance to 100 people. In addition, 22 aqueduct and sanitary sewer systems (ASADAS) were affected, of which 10 aqueducts have not been enabled. On 11 October 2018, the Peru National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) reported that the Sabancaya volcano, located 70 kilometers northwest of Arequipa Department, generated an average of 24 explosions per day from 1-7 October 2018. Ash columns reached a maximum height of 3,000 meters above the crater and dispersed an approximate radius of 50 kilometers toward the southwest, south, and southeast.
