Migratory flow across the Americas - Costa Rica - Entry to Costa Rica: South-North flow (May 2025)

Attachments

Costa Rica remains a key transit point within the Central American migratory corridor. Between January and May 2025, an estimated 3,602 people entered the country via the south–north flow, mainly from Venezuela, although in smaller proportions than in 2024. At the same time, a reverse north–south flow was identified, involving approximately 11,072 individuals—mostly Venezuelans—returning from Mexico and other northern countries. These movements reflect shifting regional dynamics, marked by irregular routes, decreased entries from South America, and growing vulnerability among migrants. Nearly 5,000 individuals were recorded as temporarily stranded in shelters or public spaces. Notably, 51% lacked essential information for their journey, and many reported needing food, shelter, or travel funds.
