SITUATION UPDATE

1. HEAVY RAINS SINCE 4 NOVEMBER AND THE TROPICAL CYCLONE GORDON CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE IN THE CENTRAL, CHOROTEGA, BRUNCA AND CENTRAL PACIFIC REGIONS. ALTHOUGH SOME AREAS AND SECTORS HAVE NOT YET BEEN ASSESSED, A REPORT ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY COMMISSION INDICATES THE FOLLOWING PRELIMINARY DATA:

2. DAMAGE BY SECTOR:

556 PERSONS HOMELESS, 263 HOUSES, 7 SCHOOLS AND 10 BRIDGES DESTROYED

TOTAL DAMAGE REPORTED SO FAR EXCEEDS USD 3 MILLION.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

3. GOVERNMENTAL NATIONAL EMERGENCY COMMISSION IS COORDINATING RELIEF EFFORTS BY GOVT AND RELIEF COMMUNITY.

4. NATIONAL EMERGENCY COMMISSION HAS ORGANIZED THE PROVISION OF FOOD SUPPLIES AND RATIONS, WATER TANKS, BLANKETS AND MATTRESSES TO THE AFFECTED POPULATION

5. NO APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE ISSUED SO FAR.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

6. DHA TOGETHER WITH UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF COSTA RICA IS MONITORING THE SITUATION.

7. IFRC ISSUED AN APPEAL FOR CHF 2 MILLION FOR THE POPULATION IN THE AFFECTED COUNTRIES INCLUDING COSTA RICA, HAITI AND CUBA.
