Situation in the DRC
• Episodes of inter-communal clashes have been occurring in the Kwamouth locality, Mai-Ndombé province, in South-West Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), since 25 July 2022. The conflict between the Teke and the Yaka started in a dispute over customary taxes on agricultural land use. The conflict has led to the internal displacement of more than 27,000 people in the DRC as of 6 October1 . More than 142 people have been killed since July, including some who were beheaded2
• After a period of calm following the deployment of FARDC government forces to the locality of Kwamouth in September, violence resumed on 13 October, according to the local Congolese authorities located in Ngabé.
• The violence in Mai-Ndombé has spread to neighbouring Kwilu province where at least 142 people have been killed as of 2 October, according to a local source reported by the joint UNHCR - UNJHRO mission3 . Kwilu province is located to the south of MaiNdombé and borders Kinshasa province to the west.
