Highlights

  • Since the declaration of the cholera epidemic on 2 February 2024 and as of 14 March, the Union of the Comoros has recorded **268 positive cases of cholera and 12 deaths, **representing a high case fatality rate of 4.5%.

  • **Children and adolescents **represent **more than 40% **of the reported cholera cases. Grande Comore and Anjouan are particularly affected by a current resurgence in cases.

  • UNICEF continued to support the scale-up of Case Area Targeted Interventions (CATI), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Red Crescent. Since 1 March**, 19 CATI teams have intervened daily across the three islands to prevent further cholera transmission, **reaching **more than 500 households **with house decontamination and stop cholera kits, and **over 2,300 people **with door-to-door or small group Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE).

  • UNICEF provided **medical supplies enabling the treatment of 100 cholera patients in Anjouan **and helped strengthen **infection prevention and control **in health facilities managing cholera.

  • In addition to targeting awareness-raising at schools as part of the CATI approach, UNICEF supported the Ministry of Education to brief **84 school council members from 10 schools **on setting up a cholera prevention and control system in schools.
