Comoros: Commission provides €500,000 in humanitarian aid for victims of Karthala volcano eruption

Brussels, May 26, 2005: The European Commission has allocated €500,000 for emergency interventions to support vulnerable populations affected by the eruption of Karthala volcano, in the eastern region of Grande Comore, the largest island of the Comoros group. The aid is being provided through ECHO, the Commission's humanitarian aid department, which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

The funds are being channelled through the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and will serve mainly to provide safe drinking water for around 38,000 people living in 36 villages who are affected by the contamination of water tanks by gas, lava and toxic fumes.
