The IOM Regional Office in Costa Rica is
assisting a group of 125 Colombian refugees who have been accepted for
resettlement in Sweden.
The group, composed of 33 families and
six single persons, were granted protection by the Costa Rican authorities
based on interviews where the newly arrived said they had fled their country
for fear of persecution.
The local UNHCR office contacted Swedish authorities for acceptance of the refugees after the group expressed fears for their safety in Costa Rica.
Following interviews carried out by Swedish authorities, who travelled to Costa Rica, the 125 persons (91 adults, 26 children and 7 infants) were accepted for resettlement.
IOM will conduct a brief cultural orientation class on life in Sweden, arrange all transport logistics, and will provide assistance at the airport on the day of departure, scheduled for 7 November. IOM staff in Caracas and Madrid will meet the group to facilitate their transit through Venezuela and Spain, and upon arrival in Stockholm.
