OVERALL PROGRESS

Context

Colombia, a South American country with diverse geography and rich biodiversity, grapples with the impacts of ongoing non-international armed conflicts, which have led to mass displacements, confinement and civilian casualties, with more than 8.3 million people projected to face humanitarian needs. Vulnerable populations include ethnic communities, peace agreement signatories, human rights defenders and migrants, particularly Venezuelan refugees and those transiting through the Darien Gap. Colombia also hosts millions of internally displaced persons and continues to experience violence, including massacres and disappearances, further straining its social fabric.
In addition to conflict, Colombia confronts natural and climate-related disasters, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, which has caused widespread droughts, fires, and other adverse events. Hydro-climatic events, seismic threats and active volcanoes pose additional risks, with nearly 40 per cent of the population living in high-seismic threat zones. The country’s exposure to tropical cyclones, particularly in the Caribbean region, heightens its vulnerability.
These intersecting crises, compounded by poverty and food insecurity, contribute to Colombia’s multidimensional humanitarian emergency.
