Key highlights
• Over half of the slightly more than 100 000 rural households who are in need of emergency agricultural assistance in the surveyed areas of Colombia are located in Córdoba (30 000), Chocó (20 000) and Magdalena (12 000) departments (Figure 1).
• Rural households involved in agricultural activities that self-identify as Afro-Colombians are in need of assistance more often than the average rural population.
• Many agricultural households do not engage in agricultural activities as their main source of income but may still be in need of agricultural assistance.
• Economic shocks, such as loss of employment and high food prices, are frequently mentioned by agricultural households in need of emergency assistance (AgHiN). Floods were also frequently reported in some areas, particularly in Chocó.
• Difficulties related to raising animals also appear to have had an impact on the need for assistance among agricultural households, particularly difficulties in purchasing feed.
• In Chocó and Córdoba, a significant number of agricultural households expressed needs for their agricultural activities. However, in Magdalena, the expressed need was almost exclusively food. Among agricultural livelihood needs, agricultural inputs, cash and fair vouchers were most frequently requested.
• Despite this finding, beneficiary satisfaction remains limited, particularly among the AgHiN that reported significant distribution delays. In a context of dwindling financial resources, more rigorous planning would allow for the delivery of necessary assistance at the most opportune time, thereby optimizing the impact of investments and meeting household needs.
