Zheng Guoguang calls to strengthen capability for meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation

On May 9, on the occasion of the upcoming third disaster prevention and mitigation day, the party leading group of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) convened a special meeting on meteorological disaster mitigation. Zheng Guoguang, Administrator of CMA, chaired the meeting and listened to the report of capability construction of meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation calling to further enhance the awareness of importance, imperativeness, and urgency of the meteorological disaster mitigation, and strengthen capability building. He emphasized the satisfaction of the public was the standard for the disaster mitigation work.

Zheng Guoguang stressed that strengthening meteorological disaster mitigation work was the bounden duty of meteorological departments. The important speeches and instructions on strengthening meteorological disaster mitigation of President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Hui Liangyu should be implemented and put meteorological disaster mitigation as the top priority of the work of sector.

He said that we should study and implement the Meteorological Law of P.R.C, Regulations on Prevention of and Preparedness for Meteorological Disasters, National Plan for meteorological Disaster Prevention (2009-2020) and related law and regulations. The sector should legally carry out all work and achieve real benefit.

Zheng Guoguang stressed to strengthen outreach and publicity on meteorological disaster knowledge. Mobilize all society and make use of the resources of meteorology, education, media to construct outreach and education basis. Strengthen the publicity and outreach to the public to enhance the awareness of disaster mitigation and the self-rescue and mutual-rescue capability of all society. (May 10)
